Employee training methods | Purpose of giving employee training

Employee training is also called as an occupational training or job training or vocational instructions for the employees. Training is the process of teaching employees the basic skills, they need to perform their jobs or for developing additional skills.

The firm’s training programs must make sense in terms of the company’s strategic goals. For e.g. if one of the goals of the company is to expand its international market, then one of the things they may focus on is training the employees in multiple languages also training is part of the larger issue of performance management.

General management: Training for planning, organizing, decision making and controlling.

People management: interpretation of company policy and negotiated agreements, communication, motivations, dealing with informal organizations, leadership, maintenance of safety and discipline, grievance handling and labor relations.

Production management: ordering supplies, maintaining inventories, controlling costs and similar materials and process management responsibilities


Content techniques: Designed to provide substantive knowledge or information on a cognitive level. Examples are lecturing, audiovisual medic and auto-instructional methods.

Process techniques: Designed to change attitudes develop self-awareness, and improve interpersonal skills, for example, role playing, sensitivity training, behavior modification and transactional analysis.

Mixed techniques: Training methods that have both information – transmitting function and an attitude change function. Examples are conference discussion, case study and on-the-job training.

Apprenticeship: The fields in which apprenticeship training is offered is numerous and range from the jobs of droughts man, mechanist, painter’s tool-makes, designers, mechanics, carpenters, weavers, fitters and electricians.

Training is a process of learning a sequence of programmed behavior. Training increases productivity and improves quality. It improves the organizational climate and prevents obsolescence. It ensures personal growth of employees.
